Through this election season, most have felt the stress & tension of this grand decision voters will make on Tuesday, November 8th. With the usual weight of elections, we have also been bombarded with “sex, lies & videotapes”. The stuff soap operas thrive on!
Its no wonder the country is stressed out, angry, losing hope and distraught.
My biggest disappointment is the absolute disregard for kindness & decency. Even last night, at a Catholic charity function, toxic words were tossed about with no thought to what should be represented at an charitable event!
Proverbs 3:3-4 – “Never let loyalty and kindness leave you! Tie them around your neck as a reminder. Write them deep within your heart. Then you will find favor with both God and people, and you will earn a good reputation.”
Just because someone in the public eye uses “nastiness” to get their point across does not make it right. Just because the potential next president normalizes “locker room talk” does not mean it is normal & should ever be normal! Just because slandering commercials are on our TV and social media with regularity during the months leading up to election day does not give any of us the right to slander those around us.
Even the church has been divided by this election! It is once again a time when the church should be “going high when they go low” but with so much negativity & divisiveness, does the church even know what way is up?
Zechariah 7:9-10 – “This is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies says: Judge fairly, and show mercy and kindness to one another. Do not oppress widows, orphans, foreigners, and the poor. And do not scheme against each other.”
I, of course, look forward to November 9, but the repercussions from the past 18 months will be a weight hard to lift!
Those simple truths we teach our children continue to hold true; be kind, tell the truth, say you’re sorry, lead by example, say Thank you…..
As a country, we must go back to those simple truths, back to the basics.
I’m willing…are you?
