The orchid

“The orchid family is a unique group, displaying different shapes, sizes, colors and fragrances. With over 25,000 different species, there are more kinds of orchids on the planet than birds or mammals! It may take many years for an orchid to bloom, but some blossoms will last for months, making the friendly-looking flowers popular houseplants.”

This short, pedestrian summary about orchids from my monthly apartment newsletter gave me pause as I read through it earlier today.

A pause of deep delight.

At the end of an emotionally heavy week, I read this description of orchids in a fresh way.

God created over 25,000 types of orchids! He gave each kind its own style, fragrance, and time table to grow. Each one beautiful and complex in it’s own way.

If you have ever tended to an orchid, or in my case, watched a friend tend to one, you know the strength of these flowers, and also the intricate care they need.

Just as God cares about the tiny details of each and every orchid, He cares about yours! In all the nuances that make up who you are, He desires to create and tend to every detail and every moment.

You matter to Him.

As you are, and as you grow… no matter the time table!

“And why worry about your clothing? Look at the lilies of the field and how they grow. They don’t work or make their clothing, yet Solomon in all his glory was not dressed as beautifully as they are. And if God cares so wonderfully for wildflowers that are here today and thrown into the fire tomorrow, he will certainly care for you.”
