The whispered voice

Be still and know
that I am God;
Can you hear
the whispered voice
in the quiet of your heart?
Then leave this world of care,
receive in solemn prayer
the place of peace
where sorrows cease
and silence fills the air;
be still.

Can you hear the whispered voice of God?

Do you take time to hear His voice?

Be Still is one of my favorite choruses to sing, or hum, when I am trying to quiet myself to listen. For me, the melody perfectly depicts the desire for stillness and focus.

Sometimes it takes so much effort to quiet my mind and my heart. I often let anxiety or my racing thoughts get the best of me…

But God deserves the best of me. He deserves my time and effort to be still and listen.

Another song that helps me quiet myself, especially at Christmas time, is Winter Snow by Audrey Assad. It describes when God has spoken softly when He could have sent floods, fires and hurricanes to demand our attention.

Could’ve come like a mighty storm
With all the strength of a hurricane
You could’ve come like a forest fire
With the power of Heaven in Your flame

(But) You came like a winter snow
Quiet and soft and slow
Falling from the sky in the night
To the earth below

Oh You could’ve swept in like a tidal wave
Or an ocean to ravish our hearts
You could have come through like a roaring flood
To wipe away the things that we’ve scarred

(But) You came like a winter snow
Quiet and soft and slow
Falling from the sky in the night
To the earth below

Oh no, Your voice wasn’t in a bush burning
No, Your voice wasn’t in a rushing wind
It was still, it was small, it was hidden

His quiet and intimate way of bringing His Son Jesus into this world speaks volumes into the nuances that we may never understand about God. The fragile infant is at once God and man, mighty and meek, ruler and servant.

“For a child is born to us, a son is given to us. The government will rest on his shoulders. And he will be called: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. His government and its peace will never end. He will rule with fairness and justice from the throne of his ancestor David for all eternity. The passionate commitment of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies will make this happen!”

‭‭Isaiah‬ ‭9:6-7‬ ‭NLT

While you quiet yourself this day, allow the fullness of God’s presence to overwhelm. Allow the beauty of His tenderness and care to gently fall over you like falling snow. Allow His peace to take away your sorrows. Listen for His still, quiet voice.

Be still.
