Bear Witness

In regard to my earlier post about this Shall We Dance movie quote…

“We need a witness to our lives. There’s a billion people on the planet… I mean, what does any one life really mean? But in a marriage, you’re promising to care about everything. The good things, the bad things, the terrible things, the mundane things… all of it, all of the time, every day. You’re saying ‘Your life will not go unnoticed because I will notice it. Your life will not go un-witnessed because I will be your witness’.”

I gave it a connection to our spiritual walk, because we do have Someone who sees us and walks with us through each and every moment.

I also want to acknowledge the desire to have a witness to our lives in our human walk. This is a sensitive subject for me, yet I am very willing to lay it out here.

I am single. A deep desire of mine is to be married and have a partner in my life for as long as he or I will walk this earth. I have wanted to be married since I was a teenager, yet that has not come to pass in my 39 years.

There are moments when this reality hits me hard, like a dump trunk unloading all it carries on top of me.

There are other times I go through daily life – see an older couple holding hands, families playing or “Starbucks lovers” flirting – and the pings of envy and cautious hope are triggered.

Most days, I live.

I go through life attending to work, friends, church and leisure with only thought of the here and now and what I am blessed with.

Yes, I want a witness who sees the innermost parts of me and my life – and oh, do I want to be a witness as well!

For now, this is my season of active waiting (another topic for another post).

In this season, I have the privilege to bear witness to my family’s lives, my friends’ lives, my coworkers’ lives, the lives of those I worship with and those I live amongst. I never want to take that for granted. I want to use the freedom I have to be available to those I can help, encourage and do life with.

I determine to be someone who says to those around me, “Your life will not go unnoticed because I will notice it.”

I decided to watch Shall We Dance last evening, and this post I wrote last October seemed appropriate to share once again. Here’s to hoping you having a witness!
