There is this great line from a romantic comedy known for three things: 1. A sultry yet innocent dance scene with Richard Gere & Jennifer Lopez 2. Richard Gere himself, and 3. This great line.

The movie, Shall We Dance, did not make a huge splash in the theaters, but did gain momentum in at-home viewing, aka TBS replays.

The line I am referring to occurs towards the end of the movie. Susan Sarandon, who plays Gere’s wife, suspects him of having an affair. In this scene, she is meeting the private investigator she hired to investigate her husband. She poses the question, “why do people get married?” Her response…

“We need a witness to our lives. There’s a billion people on the planet… I mean, what does any one life really mean? But in a marriage, you’re promising to care about everything. The good things, the bad things, the terrible things, the mundane things… all of it, all of the time, every day. You’re saying ‘Your life will not go unnoticed because I will notice it. Your life will not go un-witnessed because I will be your witness’.” 

Powerful, right? I love when a seemingly cheesy movie packs a punch like that!

We all desire to be seen, to have a witness to our lives.

If you read my post from Sunday, you will know we looked at how God “considers” us. He cares.

He notices us.

We ended with taking time to consider characteristics of God. I hope you took a few moments to do so.

Proverbs 3:6 (ESV) says,
In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.

When I read this verse today, the movie quote immediately came to my mind because we desire to be noticed.

Yet WE must also notice, and acknowledge God.

Take time in the next day to acknowledge Him in your various activities; in the “the good things, the bad things, the terrible things, the mundane things… all of it.”

This is an act of mindfulness, of focusing your thoughts to gain insight and freedom from the busyness of your own mind and the world around you. By recognizing He is always with us (Emmanuel) and He does give witness to your life, allow this acknowledgement to lead you to a more peaceful and joyful day.
