Throughout this weekend, I’d turn on the TV to see if there was anything on that caught my interest, and I would find 5 or 6 channels that had constant news feed from the Vatican. I’d watched a bit of it cause it was intriguing, then I’d turn it off cause it got me thinking…

If Christ would have died today, would there be all this hoopla?  Would thousands and thousands of people flock to the place of death and mourn there for days?  Would the media blitz be as overwhelming? Would those that are not Christians pay their respects also? Would the funeral be broadcasted in pubs, office break rooms and living rooms all over the world ?

I’ve thought about it for the past two days and honestly, I just don’t think so. Pope John Paul did not announce himself God, he was a bit controversial in his ministry with people, but nothing as blesphamous to the religious higher ups as claiming you are God, Creator of all. Jesus was so controversial in His time that I can’t imagine how much more He would be in these times!

When the Sabbath came, he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were amazed. “Where did this man get these things?” they asked. “What’s this wisdom that has been given him, that he even does miracles! ³Isn’t this the carpenter? Isn’t this Mary’s son and the brother of James, Joseph,^[aJudas and Simon? Aren’t his sisters here with us?” And they took offense at him. – Mark 6:3

³⁰Jesus warned them not to tell anyone about him.  ³¹He then began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and after three days rise again. ³²He spoke plainly about this, and Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him.   – Mark 8: 30-32

Wow…to think of how this world would treat Christ today…would we see Him as a lunatic or the Prince of Peace?  Would His life have the impact it did then, or would He be considered just another religious fanatic? Would His death bring the world to a stop, even for just a moment?
